The Joy of Walking
The joy of walking I
discovered when.
Each
step I took was a new enchantment.
With
each step I found myself lingering a bit longer
To
give more time for my feet and the ground
To
slowly, and deliberately touch each other.
to
feel the weight, the friction, the smile of each tiny pebble
revealing
itself beneath the black tar of the asphalt covered road.
Now
that the pain in my left knee has slowed me down.
I
cherish the slow-motion, careful steps that I need to take.
To
diminish the intensity of the pain the sharp edges
Of
burning torture radiating from my joints.
Now
I must walk with the help of a cane.
I
feel as if I am in love again, always needy of
That
second life, the inseparable clutch which
Gives
a new meaning to life, to passion, to joy,
The
enjoyment of walking gently, thoughtfully, watchfully,
Absorbing
the scenery above, the deep breath in the lungs,
And
the puzzling, soothing, enabling warmth under my sole,
Transfigured
into beautiful memories of love in my soul.
